Michael Scott Smith’s commitment to helping injured motorcyclists stems from an addiction to life on two wheels. The best medical care is expensive, and for that Michael Smith says “No one should ride a motorcycle without at least $100,000 in uninsured/underinsured (UM/UIM) coverage. Just as we don’t take it for granted that cars always see us on the road, we shouldn’t take it for granted that they are properly insured to cover our injuries. We, as riders, need to depend only on ourselves and protect ourselves accordingly.” Michael started riding motorcycles as a young boy, as soon as he was able to pedal–start his grandfather’s moped in Daytona Beach, Florida. Since then, motorcycles have been his primarily vehicle, both for commuting and recreational thrill–machine use, on and off the road. Some of his favorite California rides are State Route 229 and the area surrounding the Pozo Saloon, State Route 130 including Mt. Hamilton, and State Route 1–especially the Big Sur and Sonoma Coast from Bodega Bay to Gualala. Michael has an unhealthy attraction to barely–running two–stroke dirt bikes and enjoys wiping out all over Stonryford, Silver Lake and Georgetown OHV areas.
Prior to coming to Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys? (Brown, Koro & Romag), Michael Smith’s practice was in landlord/tenant disputes and business litigation. He graduated Seton Hall School of Law in Newark, NJ, where he served on the Moot Court Advisory Board. He received the best oral advocate award in appellate advocacy, and received commendations for his pro bono work in the low income tax assistance program. Michael served as acting law clerk for the Honorable Thomas J LaConte in Civil Division of the Superior Court of New Jersey.
Before pursuing a career in law, Michael Smith was an associate at Grant Thornton, LLP and received his B.S. in Business Administration from the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo in 2003, where he graduated cum laude.
Michael Smith is proud to represent fellow riders and goes the distance to assist them, even when a case is too small to warrant an attorney. Michael recently provided free ongoing advice that directly helped a rider win a maximum $10,000 small claims court victory.
In addition to practicing law and motorcycles, Michael enjoys on-and-off-road bicycling, SCUBA and free–diving for abalone, camping, and playing for the San Francisco Underwater Hockey team. He presently owns three motorcycles: a 1997 Honda Blackbird 1100, 2009 Kawasaki Concours 1400 and 1990 KTM EXC 300.
